Taiwan Issue, the Only Obstacle to Sino-Panama Ties
China's top legislator, Li Peng, said Tuesday that China hopes the Panamanian Government can review the Taiwan issue on the basis of serving the long-term and fundamental interests of Panama.
China's top legislator, Li Peng, said Tuesday that China hopes the Panamanian Government can review the Taiwan issue on the basis of serving the long-term and fundamental interests of Panama.
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, told Susana Richa de Torrijos, second vice-president of the Legislative Assembly of Panama, that to normalize relations between China and Panama would serve the fundamental and long-term interests of people in both countries.
Li expounded China's stance on the issue of Taiwan, and said the Taiwan issue was the only obstacle to relations between China and Panama.
Li said he believed the first visit by the second vice-president and her delegation to China would give them a better idea of China's economic development, reform and opening to the rest of the world.
China and Panama were both developing countries and shared similar historical experiences as each fought bravely for its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, Li said.
China paid great attention to developing relations with Panama, and firmly supported the Panamanian people's efforts to assume control of the Panama Canal. Li said China and Panama had developed relations since the two countries established Charge d'Affaires offices in 1996 in Panama City and Beijing.
Susana Richa de Torrijos said China had many friends in Panama, and there were more and more Panamanian people supporting the development of relations with China. Some people in the government and parliament were working to that end.
She said there was only one China and she supported the normalization of relations between Panama and China, because it was in the interests of the Panamanian people.
