Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has called for further involvement of enterprises in China's vocational education to meet the needs of the labor market.
Zhu made the call Monday in an address to the 11th session of the state's leading group on science, technology and education.
He said China's vocational education needed to open up to the market and should focus on the improvement of talent and skills.
Cheap labor and prices could not maintain long-term competitive advantages for domestic industries, which were short of skilled operators, said Zhu.
In the vast rural areas, new education methods should be taken, and vocational education should be aimed to improve farmers' production skills, bringing science and technology to bear on agriculture and improving the quality and competitiveness of produce.
Zhu stressed that the lack of good teachers was a pressing problem in central and western rural areas. The remote education project based on modern technology must be promoted vigorously to improve education in rural and mountainous areas.
