The leading UN agency spearheading the fight against HIV/AIDS urged the international community to galvanize political commitment, according to a statement released in New York on Monday.
The Joint UN Program of HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) called on the international community to scale up prevention and treatment and mobilize 10 billion US dollars a year to curb the epidemic.
It called for stepped up efforts to meet global anti-AIDS targets set at last year's UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS. "The promises have been made, now they must be kept," the agency said.
According to a recent report by the agency, the epidemic is still in its early phase, with no sign of leveling off in the hardest hit countries.
The report, entitled Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic 2002, warns that AIDS is erasing decades of development and cutting life expectancyby nearly half in the most affected areas.
A total of 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the world, and 5 million people were newly infected last year, according to the report.
