Hong Kong Commissioner for Narcotics Clarie Lo Friday encouraged various sectors of the community to join the Anti-drug Volunteer Group to help spread theanti-drug message.
Lo made this appeal after a meeting of the Steering Committee on Anti-drug Volunteer Group, saying that more training should be provided for Hong Kong anti-drug volunteers so that they can take up more voluntary works.
The group is open to both individual and corporate members, Lo said.
At present, 280 individual volunteers and 80 corporate volunteers have registered under the scheme, she said, adding thatindividual volunteers come from all walks of life including secondary school and university students, teachers, social workers, civil servants, retired people and housewives.
Among the individual volunteers, the youngest is a 13-year-old student while the oldest is a 79-year-old retired pharmacist, according to Lo.
Since the end of 2000, the anti-drug volunteers have participated in more than 30 anti-drug activities, including visits to treatment and rehabilitation agencies, assisting in anti-drug publicity work, and participating in organizing different types of anti-drug activities.
