Zanzibar President Amani Karume pledged on Friday that Zanzibar is willing to expand political and economic cooperation with China at all levels.
Karume made the remarks during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Wang Yongqiu in Zanzibar.
He said that Zanzibar, as a part of the United Republic of Tanzania, and China have enjoyed a very close cooperation during the past decades, which contributed to the benefits of the two peoples.
Karume said that his government attaches great importance to its ties with the Chinese government and both sides share same or similar views over a series of international and regional issues.
Speaking of his upcoming visit to Beijing at the invitation of Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao, Karume said he hopes this visit will further promote mutual understanding between China and Zanzibar.
Wang, for his part, said outstanding progress has been made in the Sino-Zanzibar relationship thanks to the joint efforts by the two governments and two peoples as well.
However, there is still a great potential for both sides to explore, especially in the sectors of economic and trade cooperation, Wang said, adding such cooperation will benefit the two peoples directly.
He noted the Chinese government will continue to support the Zanzibar government in its efforts to reduce poverty and improve the people's living conditions.
The Chinese ambassador expressed his belief that the visit by President Karume to Beijing, which is scheduled for late August, will give a new impetus to the development of friendship and cooperation between China and Zanzibar.
After the meeting, Ambassador Wang, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy to Tanzania, donated stationery and musical instrument worth 50,000 US dollars to the Zanzibar Youth Education Environment Development Support Association and Zanzibar Youth Wind Band.
