A man believed to be the stepson of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been arrested on a visa violation in Miami, Florida, the U.S. immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) said on Thursday.
Mohammad Nour al-Din Saffi, a citizen of New Zealand who has worked as a commercial airline pilot, planned to attend classes atAeroservice Aviation Center in U.S., said James Goldman, lead investigator at the INS district office in Miami.
He said Saffi was traveling as a tourist and had not applied for a student visa that would have allowed him to take flight courses.
Saffi was interviewed by the Florida joint terrorism task force, made up of the FBI, INS and state and local law enforcement, Goldman said.
After his arrest Wednesday, Saffi, 36, was transferred to the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County and was being processed for deportation to New Zealand, Goldman said.
Goldman said that Saffi tried to seek recertification training at the flight school, and he also failed to tell customs agents ofhis intent to take courses when he arrived Tuesday in Los Angeles on a flight from New Zealand. He was tracked as he made his way from Los Angeles to Miami and arrested at a motel after he arrived.
According to intelligence information developed overseas, Goldman said, the government learned that Saffi was believed to beHusssein's stepson.
