The United Nations and Iraq began a new round of talks here Thursday on the return of U.N. weapons inspectors to the country's capital, Baghdad.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri talked for half an hour before the formal meeting.
Annan said before the formal meeting that the talks would be constructive and lead to "conclusive decisions."
Annan said that the key issue was how the inspectors could comeback to Baghdad soon. They would also discuss how and when the U.N.would lift sanctions against the country.
Upon his arrival in Vienna on Monday evening, Naji Sabri expressed the hope that the Vienna meeting would lead to the finalsettlement of the problems between the U.N. and Iraq.
On Wednesday, the minister reiterated that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction and the Iraqi government was ready to hold talks on weapons inspection.
The two sides would hold two meetings on Thursday and Friday. There would also be two meetings of experts, the U.N. press officein Vienna said.
