A coal mine explosion Tuesday morning in central China's Hunan Province caused five deaths and left four people missing, according to a local official.

The devastating underground explosion in a coal mine in Doulishan Town of Lianyuan City damaged the power house near the mine's entrance and killed four miners who were going down and a winch driver in the power house.

Four miners were working in the mine when the accident took place, Lianyuan Mayor Wang Riping said.

Local sources said it is unlikely the four missing miners underground will survive because of thick poisonous gas.

Rescue efforts started right after the accident.
