70 Million People Expected to Attend Shanghai Expo 2010: Shanghai Mayor
World Expo 2010, if held in Shanghai,will have a highest ever attendance of 70 million people, Shanghai Mayor Chen Liangyu told the general assembly of the Bureau of International Exposition Tuesday in Paris.

"Shanghai received 80 million domestic and overseas visitors last year. Its tourism sector grew by 8 percent annually in the past 10 years. At this growth rate, Shanghai will have 140 millionvisitors in 2010. Experts estimate the attendance at the World Expo in Shanghai to be 70 million," said Chen in his presentation to the BIE.
Shanghai Expo 2010, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life", will showcase the best of the cities across the world in a renewed area of 4 square kilometers long the Mother River of Shanghai, Chen said.
To strive for a widest possible participation, the Chinese government and the Shanghai city will set up a fund of 100 millionU.S. dollars to provide convenience to all participating countriesand assistance to the developing countries, he added.
Shanghai is rivaling against Moscow, Mexico City, Poland's Wroclow and South Korea' s Yeoso to host World Expo in 2010.
The World Exposition, regarded as the Olympic Games of economy,science and technology, is a large-scale, global, non-commercial event to promote the exchange of ideas and development of the world.
Exhibitors publicize and display their achievements and improveinternational relationship during the event.
First held in 1851 in London, the World Expo has never been held in a developing country. Only a few European countries, the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea have hosted the event.
