U.S. Ambassador to China Clark T. Randt on behalf of the U.S. government gave China 300,000 U.S. dollars Tuesday to aid flood victims.
The American Red Cross recently donated 100,000 U.S. dollars to China's flood-ravaged areas.
Randt said the U.S. Embassy would distribute the funds through the China Red Cross Society to buy quilts, tents and water purification tablets locally for the victims.
On June 24, the China Red Cross Society made an appeal for help from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, for some 26 million yuan in aid for the areas affected by recent disastrous floods.
Richard Grove-Hills, head of the federation's East Asia regional office, said that China's appeal prompted a quick response from many countries. Currently, 10 countries had promised aid and the pledged donations would amount to 60 percent of the total sought.
Deputy Secretary-General Tang Shengwen of the Red Cross Society of China said that the U.S. donation was the largest government sum China had received since the appeal.
Floods occurred in 14 provinces and municipalities in southwest, northwest and central China in June. It was the most serious flooding in China since 1998.
