Sri Lanka Tamil Rebels Asked to Stop Demonstrations

Sri Lanka's ceasefire monitors have asked the Tamil Tiger rebels to stop demonstrations which have created tension between minority Tamil and Muslim communities and led to riots in the east of the country, The Island newspaper saidon Tuesday.

Sri Lanka's ceasefire monitors have asked the Tamil Tiger rebels to stop demonstrations which have created tension between minority Tamil and Muslim communities and led to riots in the east of the country, The Island newspaper saidon Tuesday.

Recently there had been incidents of violence in Muttur and Valachenai in the east where a large number of houses and shops had been burnt and several persons died and many were wounded.

Spokesman for the monitors Teitur Torkelsson said Tamil rebels have agreed to extend their cooperation to restore normalcy and maintain law and order in the troubled areas.

A curfew declared in the troubled areas still continues as the situation has yet to return to normal.

Meanwhile, the monitors are recording facts about the incidentsand have initiated an inquiry into the riots.
