The 11th Panchen Lama, a major religious leader in Tibet, Monday performed a Buddhist initiation service for his followers in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Through a loudspeaker, the 13-year-old 11th Panchen Lama in a clear voice recited a sutra and explained its meaning to nearly 1,000 followers at the Zhaxi Lhunbo Lamasery.

He urged the Buddhist followers to love Tibetan Buddhism and to improve themselves.

This is the second time the Panchen Lama has performed a service for his followers since he was chosen in December 1995 as the reincarnation of the late 10th Panchen Lama after candidates drew lots from a golden urn.

The initiation service, which began Monday, will last three days.

Initiation services are performed by monks of the Tantric sect of Tibetan Buddhism when they enter a higher level of spiritual development. The ritual involves instruction in spiritual theory.

Since June 11, the 11th Panchen Lama has been holding Buddhist services in Lhasa and Xigaze cities to pray for good harvests and prosperity throughout the country.

The Zhaxi Lhunbo Lamasery has also held a series of Buddhist rituals to ask for longevity and health for the Panchen Lama.
