Indian PM Makes Major Cabinet Reshuffle

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee Monday made a sweeping Changes to his cabinet in a bid tostrengthen the governing coalition and party before state elections next year, officials said.

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee Monday made a sweeping Changes to his cabinet in a bid tostrengthen the governing coalition and party before state elections next year, officials said.

A procession of ministers were being sworn in at a ceremony which started at 6:00 PM (1230 GMT) at the Presidential Palace here. Their portfolios were not immediately announced.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said the shakeup will change political careers of not only senior cabinet ranking ministers but others in Vajpayee's three-tier council of ministers.

The reshuffle is the seventh and the largest of Vajpayee's government since it took office in 1999.
