The Chinese government stands firmly behind Shanghai's bid to host the World Exposition in 2010, said Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi at a meeting Monday in Paris with Gilles Noghes, President of the International Exposition Bureau (BIE in French).

"China has participated in World Exposition activities ever since the earliest days of the event. In recent years our cooperation has further developed with the rapid economic growth in China," Wu Yi told Noghes on the eve of the BIE assembly.

Wu is also chief of the 2010 Shanghai Expo Bidding Committee.

"A World Exposition in Shanghai will contribute to the opening-up and reform in China, expand exchange and cooperation between Shanghai and other countries and add to World Expo dynamics," she added.

Bidding For World EXPO
Wu further informed Noghes of the strong popular support in China for the bid to host the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010.

BIE Secretary-General Vicent Gonzalez Loscertales, Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Tang Jiaxuan, Chairman of Chinese Trade Promotion Committee Yu Xiaosong, Mayor of Shanghai Chen Liangyu and Chinese Ambassador to France Wu Jianmin all attended the meeting.

On Tuesday, Moscow, Mexico City, Poland's Wroclow, South Korea's Yeoso and Shanghai will present to the BIE assembly their plans for hosting the 2010 World Exposition.

World Expo and BIE
International Expositions are defined by the Bureau international des expositions / International bureau of expositions ( B.I.E ) as a forum for the exchange of information which fosters better understanding amongst people. Each nation is invited to share its ideas and to demonstrate the progress it has achieved on a theme determined by the exposition organizer.

The B.I.E., a Paris-based organization of 88 member nations, regulates the frequency and quality of international expositions. (More)
