A letter of congratulation was sent over by Wu Bangguo, member of the political bureau of the CCCPC and vice premier of the State Council.
In the letter, Wu said, it is a strategic decision of great importance made by the CCCPC and the State Council to build the Qinghai - Tibet Railway, a landmark project in the implementation for great development in the west. The laying of track rails along the section from Golmud to Wangkun is an important result obtained in the periodic construction of the Qinghai - Tibet Railway over the year past.
Setting off on Jun.29, 2001 the railroad started from Golmud in the north, stretching over a distance of 1,142 kilometers to end at Lhasa in the south. All along the way, a section of over 960 kilometers are over and above 4,000 meters above sea level, the highest altitude being 5,072 meters, of which about 550 kilometers are in the frozen earth region. It will take six years to bring the project to the finish.
Under the loving care of the CCCPC and with the arduous work of the workers, the project of Qinghai - Tibet Railway has made a great way ahead with a good engineering quality since it was set off. There are 24,000 workers, 149 supervisory personnel and nearly 6,000 sets of equipment working along the line.
So far it has completed an investment of RMB 2.4 billion-yuan with 14.80 million cubic meters of earthwork done for the roadbed, brought to the finish 19,910 long meters in bridge construction, 9,060 meters of culverts and the finished tunnels coming to 2,800 meters. The frozen earth research work has achieved a preliminary result with outstanding effects sounded in the work for environmental protection and the guarantee for workers' hygiene has seen a continuous improvement.
As learned, from this year onwards, the railroad builders will have to work under a rigid condition of 4,500 to 5,000 meters above sea level at many more work-sites, the elongated area for work extending as long as 500 kilometers. Now the work has been carried up to the rim area of the renowned nature reserve of Kekexili and the water-heads of the three rivers, a perennial frozen earth area by the north of the Tanggula Mountains.
This year is planned to invest RMB 5 billion-yuan in the railway construction with the track-laying work carried to Wangkun by the end of the coming November.
