At least 20 passengers travelling ina luxury bus from Nigeria's southern city of Owerri to Lagos have been killed by armed robbers along the highway connecting southerntowns of Asaba and Benin City, local media reported on Sunday.

According to the reports, the robbers forces the bus to a halt and staged their attacks on Friday night at Koko junction in Asaba, about 150 meters to the Delta State police headquarters.

At the end of the bloody operations, 12 bodies were found on the spot, while others sustaining serious injuries died after theywere rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Asaba, the reports said.

The local media expressed shock that the robbers chose the committed spot so near the state police command and succeeded.

In the last six months, there has been an increase of the spateof robbery attacks on luxury buses especially those traveling at night.

In March, two buses were met rampant attacks by the robbers along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near the Lagos end. At least 10 people were killed in the incidents.

Crime levels have risen in Africa's most populous country as economic hardship has increased in recent years. In the past several months, armed robbers often ruthlessly attacked and robbedtheir victims in broad daylight and have killed quite some police officers on duty during the raid.

To stem the rampant activities of armed robbers, Nigerian Inspector General of Police Tafa Balogun earlier this year introduced the Operation-Fire-for-Fire on robbers. Hundreds of robbers have been killed under the operation.
