9 Dead, 30 Ill in Gastroenteritis Outbreak in India

Nine persons died and 30 others fell ill following an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Akbarpur locality in north India's Uttar Pradesh, local officials said Sunday.

Nine persons died and 30 others fell ill following an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Akbarpur locality in north India's Uttar Pradesh, local officials said Sunday.

The outbreak of gastroenteritis, which has spread in the locality in the past three days, was due to contaminated water andpoor sanitation in the area, they said.

The outbreak came to light after residents complained of vomiting and stomach upset, the Press Trust of India said.

The district administration and health department officials rushed to the site with medical assistance and measures were takento provide potable water and improve sanitary conditions in the locality.
