Zambian President Orders Probe Into Missing US$75 Million
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Saturday ordered a probe into the country's closed Luanshya Mine and the disappearance of 75 million U.S. dollars, which were part of the money realized from the sale of the project.
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Saturday ordered a probe into the country's closed Luanshya Mine and the disappearance of 75 million U.S. dollars, which were part of the money realized from the sale of the project.
An Indian firm, belonging to the Binani Group, bought the mine five years ago for 245 million dollars.
It was later renamed Roan Antelope Mining Corporation of Zambia.
But the mine was, however, closed two years ago because it could not be kept running, a move that has left some 5,000 of its workers stranded with little prospect of getting employment elsewhere.
The Zambian government has put the redundant mine workers on " unemployment benefits."
Finance Minister Emmanuel Kasonde and Mining Minister Davison Mulela met Friday with the workers' representatives led by Andrew Mwanza, president of the Mineworkers Union of Zambia, and assured them the government would address their plight.
Mwanawasa, who is currently visiting Zambia's mineral-rich Copperbelt region, also ordered investigation into the Copperbelt Energy Corporation, in which 23 million dollars are believed to be missing.
