Mugabe Says Zimbabwe's Food Shortage is Artificial
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said Saturday in Harare that the food shortage was artificial due to the hoarding of foodstuffs by a local food company, a media report said.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said Saturday in Harare that the food shortage was artificial due to the hoarding of foodstuffs by a local food company, a media report said.
"I want to say this to National Foods, and this is an Anglo- American company, we want them to come out in the open and tell this nation why they have been hoarding salt, why... they are creating shortages?" Mugabe said on TV.
The National Foods, a food company in Zimbabwe owned by the multinational Anglo-American Corporation, has been accused of creating shortages by hoarding foodstuffs.
Mugabe also threatened to take over the company if the situation like this continued.
"Do they still want to operate in partnership with our government, with our people. If not we will take over their enterprise," said the president.
Recently, Zimbabwe has been experiencing a serious shortage of basic foodstuffs, such as maize, cooking oil, sugar and salt.
