A joint operation coded "Fire Phoenix" has dealt a hard blow against drug trafficking and violent gangs in the south China region encompassing Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

On Wednesday, which marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, police officers involved in the operation gathered in Shenzhen, Guangdong to declare a manifesto on continued cooperation between the three parties in the fight against drug abuse.

At a ceremony held in the square in front of the city's gymnasium, and in front of 6,000 people, 1,618.72 kg of drugs seized by police in Guangdong over the past few years were destroyed.

The joint police operation started on June 1 and helped crack down on 5,745 drug-related criminal activities. During the operation 361 gangs were destroyed, 5,895 suspects arrested, 112 firearms confiscated and 41,064 grams of heroin, 17,438 grams of " ice" (crystal methamphetamine) and 21,611 grams of MDMA, also a type of amphetamine, were seized.

It is the first joint operation to strike against gangsterdom, drug and violence crimes in the south China region, which is expected to create a favorable social security environment for the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 5th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong.

Guangdong's border with the two special administrative regions has created easy drug trafficking passages for international drug syndicates, which use Guangdong as a springboard to smuggle drug into China's inland regions.

The amount of heroin smuggled via Guangdong to China's inland only follows after that by way of Yunnan, which borders the notorious "Golden Triangle" drug production center, a convergence of the borders of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos.
