Activities Mark Int'l Anti-drug Day in China
A range of activities with the theme "drug abuse and AIDS" were organized throughout China on Wednesday to mark the 15th International Anti-drug Day. The annual international anti- drug day has played an important role in controlling drug abuse in China, and this year's theme will increase public awareness of the harm caused by drug abuse.
A range of activities with the theme "drug abuse and AIDS" were organized throughout China on Wednesday to mark the 15th International Anti-drug Day.
Courts across the country publicly announced verdicts on drug- related crimes to give warnings to drug traffickers and addicts.
Police from the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province, Chongqing Municipality and Fujian Province publicly burnt various types of narcotics they had seized. In Chongqing alone, the local police burnt more than 1,700 kg of drugs including 55 kg of heroin.
Emphasizing the "drug abuse and AIDS" theme, a large performance was held Wednesday night in Beijing to extoll people to treasure life and reject drugs.
A torch-relay to promote drug control was organized in Xinjiang and achieved its mission to introduce anti-drug knowledge to over 100,000 people by providing them with written information.
Public awareness needs to be increased
China has recently become one of the victims of world drug traffickers. Statistics show that people in 2,051 Chinese cities and counties have become involved in drug abuse. Of these 205 have drug-abusing populations of over 1000 each. There are over 900,000 registered drug addicts in China.
Yang Fengrui, an official in charge of drug control from the Ministry of Public Security, said the annual international anti- drug day has played an important role in controlling drug abuse in China, and this year's theme will increase public awareness of the harm caused by drug abuse.
Statistics show there were 850,000 Chinese people infected with HIV at the end of last year, 68 percent of whom were infected by sharing needles while using drugs.
Yang said that the Chinese government has organized anti-drug publicity campaigns to encourage more people, especially young people, to love life and reject narcotics.
These campaigns not only demonstrate the Chinese government's determination to control drugs but also involve the general public in the fight against narcotics.
In the first half of this year, the Chinese police launched an intensive nationwide campaign against narcotics, which was very effective.
By mid-June, Chinese police had cracked 45,378 drug-related cases and captured 38,765 drug-related criminals, seizing 4,035 kg heroine, 596 kg of "ice"- crystal methamphetamine, 630,000 ecstasy pills, 87 tons of drug-producing chemicals and many other kinds of narcotics. Throughout the country more than 100,000 drug addicts have been forced to undergo treatment and rehabilitation.
