The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison has received some 100,000 visitors from all walks of life since it was stationed in the special administrative region on July 1, 1997.
PLA soldiers now are stationed in 14 barracks in Hong Kong. Four have been opened to visitors over the past five years, said a source from the garrison's headquarters.
The Hong Kong visitors, mostly citizens, were all very curious about the PLA barracks, and were allowed to visit the drill ground, reading room, dormitories, kitchen, dining room and even lavatories to see how the soldiers manage their daily life.
The visitors were also treated by the soldiers to demonstrations of boxing, shooting and other impressive skills and could join them in ball games, chess and karaoke.
The PLA naval fleet in Ngong Shuen Chau impressed many visitors, particularly children, with their missile escort ship built in China and other state-of-the-art weapons.
Direct communication between Hong Kong residents and PLA soldiers have enhanced mutual understanding and friendship.
"This is a strong army. The PLA men are brave and well-educated. I feel proud of them," said a visitor, who has visited the garrison three times.
