Twenty six miners and their families were killed Monday as flash floods caused by torrential rains washed into three coal mines in north China's Weixian County, Hebei Province.

Water flooded into the Yongfa coal mine in Yongquanzhuang Township and the Heijinshan coal mine in Yangzhuangke Township at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, destroying the pit of the first and trapping 13 miners in the second.

A third mine, the Dashujian coal mine in the Baicaoxiang Township, was not flooded but above ground buildings were severely damaged and 22 miners and their families died in the floods.

Provincial and county-level officials quickly rushed to the site to coordinate rescue work.

By the press time, the rescuers are racing against time to rescue miners trapped underground and repair damaged pits.
