In an updated plan for the 2010 World Exposition, an additional 60 hectares of land has been allocated in east China's commercial center Shanghai to show the city's determination to host the event.

The planned venue for the hoped-for event has now increased in size to 400 hectares and will cost over 3 billion US dollars, a source from the bidding committee for the 2010 World Expo has said.

"We aim to provide ample room for all the participants to display their finest products, and hope to draw many visitors from throughout the world," an official explained.

If Shanghai wins the bid, it will host the most successful, spectacular and unforgettable event ever, he said.

The venue selected for the 2010 World Expo is in an old urban district in downtown Shanghai, beside the city's "mother river" - the Huangpujiang.

The site fits in well with Shanghai's theme for the exposition - a "Better City, Better Life".

As well as buildings for meetings, exhibitions, entertainment and commerce, the plans for the complex include, a canal running around an oval, a zigzagging "green corridor" and a pedestrian bridge over the Huangpujiang River. The completed project will be an example of the harmony possible between man and nature and is expected to be a new landmark in Shanghai.

The World Exposition has been regarded as the most prestigious exhibition since it was launched in London in 1851.

Russia, the republic of Korea, Poland, Argentina and Mexico are also bidding for the hosting of the exposition.

The 88 members of the International Expositions Bureau will vote in December to decide on which country will host the exposition.
