As an important part of the bilateral ties, the contacts between China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan has played an active role in advancing all-round growth of state-to-state ties.

Chinese top legislator Li Peng made this remark in Beijing Tuesday during his meeting with visiting Kyrgyzstan President Askar Akayev.

Li, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, spoke highly of the growth of bilateral ties and expanded fruitful cooperation in economic, trade, transportation, culture and other areas in the past decade after the two countries forged diplomatic ties.

The comprehensive settlement of the border issue between the two countries demonstrated the highly-trusting political relationship between the two countries and the aspiration of their people for a lasting friendship, Li noted.

President Akayev was in Beijing on a working visit as guest of his Chinese counterpart President Jiang Zemin. The two heads of state signed a neighborly, friendly and cooperative pact Monday following their successful talks.

Akayev told Li that the signing of the document would raise bilateral ties to a new high and open new prospects for bilateral cooperation in all fields.

Kyrgyzstan values its friendship with China and has given the development of its ties with China priority in the country's foreign policy, and the settlement of the border issue between the two countries has also laid a more solid foundation for the future growth of bilateral ties, he said.

Akayev spoke positively on bilateral cooperation in political, transport, energy, education, culture and other areas.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the international and central Asia situation, cooperation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and other issues of common concern.
