Israeli Troops Surround Arafat's Compound In Ramallah

Israeli tanks and military vehicles entered the West Bank city of Ramallah early Monday and surroundedthe compound of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat there, Palestinian security sources said.

Israeli tanks and military vehicles entered the West Bank city of Ramallah early Monday and surroundedthe compound of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat there, Palestinian security sources said.

A Palestinian official inside Arafat's shell-shattered headquarters confirmed the entry of Israeli tanks but could not say exactly where they were.

A number of tanks were taking up positions around the compound and about 40 were seen intruding into the city from the northeast to the northwest, Palestinian sources said.

Two Israeli helicopters covered the incursion from above, addedthe sources.
