President Jiang Offers Condolences for Iranian Quake

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Saturday expressed his deep condolences for the victims who died in the strong earthquake early Saturday in northern and western Iran.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Saturday expressed his deep condolences for the victims who died in the strong earthquake early Saturday in northern and western Iran.

In a letter of condolence to Iranian President Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, Jiang said he was distressed to learn of the strong earthquake, which resulted in heavy casualties and a serious loss of property.

"On behalf of the Chinese government and Chinese people and in my own name, I express my heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathy and solicitude to you, and to the families of the victims," said the Chinese president.

Jiang said he firmly believes that under the leadership of Khatami, the diligent Iranian people would certainly succeed in conquering the natural disaster and rebuilding a beautiful homeland.

More than 400 people were killed and 1,000 injured in the strong quake, which measured 6.0 degrees on the open-ended Richardscale and hit at least eight Iranian provinces.
