The "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law have won widespread recognition of the local and international community since the return of Hong Kong to China five years ago, CPPCC Vice Chairman Fok Ying Tung said Saturday.
The "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law have won widespread recognition of the local and international community since the return of Hong Kong to China five years ago, CPPCC Vice Chairman Fok Ying Tung said Saturday.
Speaking at a media briefing, Fok Ying Tung, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" have been turned into reality from written document.
The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ( SAR), led by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, has carried out the " one country, two systems" principle with a high degree of autonomy to the letter, he noted, prior to the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR which falls on July 1 this year.
Although Hong Kong encountered the Asian financial crisis and some problems left by the former British Hong Kong authorities, the SAR government has managed to maintain a stable economy, he said, adding the world has witnessed the progress Hong Kong made over the past five years.
After China's accession into the World Trade Organization, Hong Kong, as a bridge linking the mainland to the rest of the world, will benefit greatly from the huge mainland market, he said.
Fok said he is proud of being a Chinese after the return of Hong Kong to the motherland.
He also praised Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa for his effective administration in implementing the Basic Law and said the Accountability System, which will be introduced from July 1 in line with the Basic Law and Hong Kong's mechanism, is helpful to the development of Hong Kong.
