More heavy rains have swept the already flood-stricken southern part of Shaanxi Province, northwest China, since Friday, causing new damage in some areas.
Sources with the provincial flood-control headquarters said Saturday that torrential rains began Friday morning, triggering flooding mainly in Zhenba County.
Power supply and telecommunications service in most parts of the county were knocked out and a great number of houses, roads, bridges, and dikes in Ping'an, Guanyin, and Bamiao townships were destroyed by floods, according to the sources.
However, no casualties have been reported as local residents were evacuated to safety in advance.
The counties of Foping and Ningshan, which were hit most by the June 8-10 floods, were barely affected by the rain.
It is estimated that the flooding caused by torrential rains from June 8 to 10 has inflicted 2.1 billion yuan of direct losses (253 million U.S. dollars) on the province.
Local people are braced for possibly more floods as meteorologists predict more heavy rain for the next two days in the southern part of the province, including Foping and Ningshan.
