Israeli telecommunications vendors have cast their eyes on the fast-growing Chinese market, in particular the anticipated third generation (3G) mobile communication systems and the Next Generation Network (NGN) for fixed-line telecom in China, Israeli officials say.

"The telecom industry in China has attracted more and more attention from Israeli companies and their ability to tailor applications will be a big help to Chinese operators," said Haim Geron, deputy director general with Israel's Ministry of Communication. Geron made the remarks on Thursday at a China-Israel Telecom IT Seminar held in Beijing.

Wachtel, president and chief executive of RAD Data Communications, one of Israel's biggest telecom equipment and solution providers, has decided to set up a joint venture in China to localize its production to fend off threats from local, US and European competitors.

Last year, Israel exported US$150 million in telecom and information technology (IT) products out of a total of US$333 million in exports to China. Telecom and IT exports to China rose 55 per cent over the previous year.

More than 70 telecom-related companies have set up offices, companies or joint ventures here in the world's most populous country.

The Israeli delegation also called on Chinese enterprises to participate in the Telecom Israel 2002 exhibition to be held in Tel Aviv on November 4-7.

The biennial activity will exhibit the latest developments in fixed-line and mobile telecom technologies and applications from more than 350 exhibitors.
