Ambassador of Thailand in Sri Lanka Jerm Tivayanond has said that all arrangements had been finalized in Thailand for the peace talks between the Sri Lanka government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, the official Daily News said on Friday.
The ambassador told reporters Thursday that Thailand has been following the situation in Sri Lanka very closely. The talks will be held in July or at the latest in August. It would be unwise to delay the talks too long, he said.
He added that he did not think the proscription of the Tamil rebels by the government was an impediment to the talks.
The Tamil rebels have repeatedly demanded the lifting of the ban on the organization as a precondition of the upcoming peace talks. The government has said that the ban will be lifted 10 daysbefore the talks start but no date for the talks has been fixed.
Constitutional Affairs Minister and government spokesman G.L. Peiris said on Thursday that the government is not concerned with the unduly slight delay in the peace talks, which were expected tohave taken place in early May as it was important to the Norwegian-brokered peace process.
