China Unicom CDMA Subscribers up 83,000 to 785,000 in May
China Unicom Ltd's target of signing up seven million subscribers for its CDMA mobile network this year appeared further out of reach Thursday as new figures showed the number of new subscribers slowed in May.
China Unicom Ltd's target of signing up seven million subscribers for its CDMA mobile network this year appeared further out of reach Thursday as new figures showed the number of new subscribers slowed in May.
China's second largest mobile phone operator said it had signed up 83,000 new subscribers to its CDMA (code division multiple access) network in May for a total of 785,000 users.
BNP Paribas Peregrine regional telecommunications director Lai Voon San described the CDMA subscriber growth numbers as alarming.
"They added less subscribers in May than in April. That is particularly troubling," he said
April saw 134,000 new subscribers for China Unicom's CDMA service.
He sees China Unicom achieving a maximum of two million CDMA subscribers by the end of the year if it does not reduce charges for the service.
China Unicom said it had a total of 32.13 million subscribers for its global system for mobile (GSM) cellular services at end-May, up from 31.13 million a month earlier.
China Unicom's parent is China United Telecommunications Corp., which along with China Mobile Communications Corp., are the two leading mobile telephone operators in China.
