Foot and mouth disease has been detected within a herd of 3,112 cattle in the Kana communal area in Gokwe South in Zimbabwe, according to the Herald on Thursday.

Because the area is close to the previously affected area of Lupane, some 50 kilometers east of Sobendle dip tank, Gokwe South has been quarantined.

The head of information management unit in the Department of Veterinary Services, Alec Bishi, was quoted as saying that all cattle sales in the affected area had been canceled and cattle movements restricted except for those from farms to registered abattoirs for direct slaughter.

Bishi said since the outbreak has occurred outside the export zone, it was expected that current international trade arrangements would not be affected.

Newcastle disease was diagnosed at Masakadza Animal Health Center in Gokwe district last week while tick and other vector borne diseases have generally been low owing to the dry weather.

Bishi said that there was an increased risk of transmission of contagious diseases as a result of movements of livestock in search of grazing.

It was also suspected that the latest outbreak could have been caused by the contact of cattle with buffalo from the Chirisa safari area, which was only 30 kilometers south of Kana communal lands.

Vaccine to control the current foot and mouth outbreak was available and efforts were underway to increase current stocks. The department required two million doses of the vaccine to maintain immunity in previously vaccinated cattle in Matabeleland North and South and in the traditional vaccination zones.

According to the animal health situation report on disease outbreaks reported countrywide in the last two months, there were two foot and mouth outbreaks while 18 outbreaks were reported lastyear.

An outbreak was also reported in Zambia's Mbala district where 30 clinical cases were detected in a herd of 400 cattle.

The affected area, which has experienced outbreaks before is only 100 kilometers from the Zimbabwe border.
