Poland's national soccer coach Jerzy Engel is ready to quit after his team's poor performance at the World Cup finals, the 49-year-old said on Wednesday.

Poland was eliminated in the first round after defeats at the hands of co-hosts South Korea and Portugal, although they did manage a face-saving victory against the United States.

Engel blames individual defensive mistakes for losses against South Korea and Portugal, during which Poland conceded six goals and failed to score, although he also said his tactics were too conservative.

Engel said: "I am ready to leave my post, this is part of my job as a coach."

Polish soccer bosses are due to decide on Friday whether to sack Engel who transformed a hapless Polish team into World Cup finalists for the first time since 1986.
