The Congolese government forces said they have killed some 150 and captured more than 30 "Ninja" rebel militiamen following hours of fighting near the international airport of Brazzaville on Wednesday morning.
Seven government soldiers and a dozen civilians were killed, according to the police in the capital of the Republic of Congo.
The militiamen "had marched for three days through the forest before infiltrating into the west part of the capital," said the police, adding that two key players of the militias were killed during the battle.
In Congo-Brazzaville's civil war in the 1990s, the Ninja militia supported former prime minister Bernard Kolelas, one of the foes of Denis Sassou Nguesso who seized power from former president Pascal Lissouba after a renewed outbreak of war in 1997.
An estimated 20,000 people have died and another 800,000 peoplebeen uprooted in Congo's protracted political and ethnic conflict, which intensified during the 1990s before officially ending in 1999.
