Investigators reported Tuesday that Kim Hong-up, S. Korean President Kim Dae-jung's son, received money directly from several companies. The allegations were made one day before the president's second son was to appear before prosecutors for questioning on influence-peddling charges.
The Supreme Prosecutors Office reported Tuesday they found three bank accounts in Mr. Kim's name with balances totaling 1.1 billion won ($910,000). Prosecutors are investigating the circumstances under which the money was given to Mr. Kim.
The report was first alleged sign of evidence against Mr. Kim despite long-held suspicions among prosecutors that he had received bribes from companies through a college friend in exchange for helping the firms win public contracts.
Yoo Jae-in, Mr. Kim's lawyer, said his client did not take a bribe and that the money in the accounts was a gift.
Prosecutors will also question two close aides -- Yoo Jin-geol and Kim Seong-hwan -- in the investigation.
Prosecutors said they will seek a detention warrant and charge Mr. Kim with bribery if enough evidence is found. Otherwise, Mr. Kim will be charged with tax evasion for not reporting the money as income.
