Sri Lankan Govt, Tamil Rebels Discuss Peace Process

Director General of the Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process in Sri Lanka Bernard Goonetilleke Tuesday discussed the peace process with separatist Tamil Tiger rebel political wing leader Tamil Chelvan.

Director General of the Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process in Sri Lanka Bernard Goonetilleke Tuesday discussed the peace process with separatist Tamil Tiger rebel political wing leader Tamil Chelvan.

The government said in a statement that the two sides discussedfor two hours in rebel-held north a wide range of matter pertaining the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed inFebruary and the on-going peace process.

The issues discussed included the use of main A-9 highway linking the country's north and south for direct transportation, the question of sea movements, and withdrawal of government forcesfrom public buildings, schools and places of religious worship.

Both sides also exchanged views on the de-proscription of the Tamil Rebels, the forthcoming negotiations between the two sides in Thailand and other confidence building measures.

A joint team consisting of government representatives, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission and other parties will deal with the issue of withdrawal of government forces.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continue to work towards achieving lasting peace in the country where more than 64,000 people have died in the 19-year ethnic conflict.

The government and Tamil rebels are expected to hold direct peace talks in Thailand in July in a bid to end the country's long-running ethnic war.
