Iraq and Iran on Tuesday exchanged the remains of 123 soldiers killed in their 1980-1988 war, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The swap, including the remains of 53 Iraqi and 70 Iranian soldiers, took place at the bordering city of Al-Shlamcha in Iraq'ssouthern Basra Province, the INA said.

The last exchange took place in February when the two neighboring countries swapped the remains of 134 soldiers killed intheir eight-year war.

The exchanges came under an agreement signed by Baghdad and Tehran in January to exchange the remains of 1,184 Iraqi soldiers and 574 Iranians killed in the war.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri visited Iran during January 25-29 to try to settle the outstanding "humanitarian" issues, including prisoners of war, and normalize bilateral relations.

More than 13 years after their ceasefire, the two neighbors haveneither normalized their relations nor signed a peace treaty.

Some 1 million Iraqis and Iranians were killed in the bloody war.
