Eleven trucks loaded with disaster relief supplies donated by private companies left here Tuesday morning for southern Shaanxi Province, which was ravaged by floods last week.

Coordinated by the Xi'an Federation of Industry and Commerce, 35 non-state-owned enterprises joined the government's relief work. The donations of food and clothes are worth more than 260,000 yuan (31,000 U.S. dollars).

Heavy rain swept the southern part of Shaanxi from June 8 to 10, causing serious flooding that killed more than 150 and left 300 missing. Some 5.1 million people were affected. Communications, transportation and power supply were shut off.

The people in Shaanxi Province, northwest China, have been mobilized to participate in flood control and a donation campaign begun to help those in flood-stricken areas.

So far, apart from the government relief funds of 20 million yuan (2.4 million U.S. dollars), donations have amounted to over 100,000 yuan (12,000 U.S. dollars).

A road damaged by floods has now been repaired, enabling relief supplies to be transported from Xi'an to Ningshan County.

Flood victims are reportedly returning to normal life and have begun rebuilding their homes as relief supplies arrive.
