Iraq said on Monday that it was notscared by U.S. media reports that U.S. President George W. Bush hasdirected the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
"It is nothing new. The United States has plotted against Iraq for over 30 years," said Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri Ahmed, quoted by the official Iraqi News Agency (INA).
"We have been confronting the U.S. aggression for the past 11 years and we have heard a lot of such threats," Ahmed said.
According to a report by the Washington Post on Sunday, Bush hasordered the CIA to undertake a comprehensive and covert program to overthrow Saddam this year.
The report said that the CIA has been authorized to use all possible means, including the possible use of U.S. special forces, and even kill Saddam.
Bush has branded Iraq as part of an "axis of evil" and strongly warned that Iraq may become the next target of the U.S.-led war on terrorism.
One objective of the U.S. foreign policy has been the overthrow of Saddam, who has been ruling Iraq since 1979.
Iraq has remained defiant and vowed to defend itself in the caseof fresh U.S. military attacks.
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz has said that the Iraqis support their leadership and are ready to defend their leadership and country against U.S. aggression.
"George W. Bush is the president of the United States. He can make decisions in his own country, but he does not have the right, he does not have the capability to change anything outside his country, especially in this courageous country," Aziz said in April.
