Time Not Right for Establishment of Palestinian State: Sharon
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Sunday that the conditions are not ripe for the establishment of a Palestinian state, Israel Radio reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Sunday that the conditions are not ripe for the establishment of a Palestinian state, Israel Radio reported.
Sharon made the remark at the weekly cabinet meeting, which is apparently a negative signal to U.S. President George W. Bush, who will deliver a speech later during the week on the issue of the establishment of the Palestinian state.
In his speech, Bush is expected to propose setting up a "provisional" Palestinian state alongside Israel, and to call on Israel to immediately freeze the building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank Palestinian areas.
Sharon has insisted that the stages to reach peace with the Palestinians should include an end to violence and incitement, reform of the Palestinian National Authority, diplomatic negotiations leading to recognition of a Palestinian state without borders, and finally talks about setting borders.
During the visit to the United States last week, Sharon reportedly told Bush that he could not publicly support a provisional Palestinian state at this stage due to the escalation of Palestinian attacks over the past 12 months.
However, reports here said that Sharon implied that he has accepted the proposal that recognition of a provisional Palestinianstate ought to be the first step in diplomatic negotiations.
