More Cautions, Less Expulsions in Korea/Japan Than in France '98

Referees gave more cautions and less expulsions in the first round of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan than in the France '98 tournament four yeas ago, according to statistics provided by FIFA.

Referees gave more cautions and less expulsions in the first round of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan than in the France '98 tournament four yeas ago, according to statistics provided by FIFA.

Referees showed 205 yellow cards and sent 13 players off duringthe group stage of this World Cup. The corresponding figure for the first round of the last World Cup was 180 and 18, respectively.

In the June 11 Group E match in Shizuoka between Cameroon and Germany, Spanish referee Antonio Lopez Nieto gave 8 cautions and 1expulsion to each team.

Dutch referee Jan Wegereef showed 12 yellow cards in the Group A match between Senegal and Uruguay on the same day.

There were two group matches with no cautions or expulsions: the June 5 Group E clash between Germany and Ireland and the June 12 Nigeria-England match in Group F.
