The 11th Panchen Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhist believers, returned to his resident palace at Shigatse Friday after concluding his trip to Lhasa, capital of Tibet.
On his arrival back in Shigatse, a city 277 kilometers west of Lhasa, he was warmly greeted by a crowd of Buddhist monks and other Tibetans.
During his stay in Lhasa, the Panchen Lama had paid homage to the Jokhang Temple and the Ramogia Monastery, where two statues of the Buddha Sakyamuni are located, and met with local government officials.
The 11th Panchen ascended the throne in 1995 at Zhaxi Lhunbo Lamasery after he was confirmed the reincarnated Panchen Lama in line with religious custom. The last Panchen Lama died in 1989.
