U.S. President George W. Bush telephoned newly-elected Afghan transitional leader Hamid Karzai on Friday to congratulate him on his election victory.
"The president had a five-minute conversation with newly elected Afghan President Hamid Karzai to congratulate him on his election victory," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters on the Air Force One flight carrying Bush on a trip to Houston.
"The president expressed his gratitude and confidence in his leadership," McClellan told reporters.
Karzai, who has led the country as interim government chairman since December, won an overwhelming victory in the election of thehead of the transitional government with 1,295 votes in a secret ballot late Thursday.
