The United States lost their last Group D match but still advanced into the second round with the help from the World Cup co-hosts South Korea.

The Americans lost 3-1 to Poland but South Korea sent them into the round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Portugal.

The South Korean team won the group with 7 points while the Americans also qualify with 4 points. Portugal and Poland, each with three points, are eliminated.

Only 3 minutes into the match, the Americans found themselves already 1-0 down as Emmanuel Olisadebe broke a 180-minute goal drought with a right-footer.

Just two minutes later, Olisadebe's up-front partner Pawel Kryszalowicz made it 2-0 with a shot from close range.

The Polish team have several more scoring chances in the first half but the American goalkeeper Brad Friedel denied them all.

The second half was more balanced as the Americans found the right way to cope with the stronger and faster Polish opponents. But a defence blunder again let them down.

Second-half substitute Marcin Zewlakow headed home the third goal with his first touch of the ball at the 66th minute.

The Polish team could have enlarge the gap to 4-0 but Maciej Zurawski's penalty kick at the 76th minute was saved by American goalkeeper Friedel. It was Friedel's second penalty save in the tournament.

The Americans didn't give up and they finally got rewarded whenat the 83rd minute Landon Donovan put his name on the scorers' list.

The United States will take on fellow CONCACAF qualifiers Mexico in the round of 16 while group winners South Korea have to face European giants Italy.
