Disaster Relief, Rebuilding Going Well in Flood-hit NW China Province
Flood victims in Fuping County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, are returning to normal life and have begun rebuilding their homes as relief supplies reached them in recent days.
Flood victims in Fuping County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, are returning to normal life and have begun rebuilding their homes as relief supplies reached them in recent days.
To date, three batches of relief supplies have been transportedto the county since June 10, and the fourth is due to arrive there late Friday.
According to Zhang Wei, a deputy governor of Shaanxi, helicopters had joined the rescue efforts, and so far had carried more than 800 kilograms of medicines and other supplies.
Many supplies were moved to flood victims by manpower since roads to the county were destroyed by the floods that hit the county during the weekend. Many people tramped for 30 km over hills and valleys to take materials to a transfer station.
More than 20 medical workers from hospitals in Hanzhong City arrived in Fuping County on Thursday and began working in disaster-affected areas.
The devastating floods that hit the county on June 8-9 caused blackouts and communications and traffic break-downs. More than 230 people were reportedly killed or missing.
So far, more than 8,000 people in the county town of Fuping have resumed normal life. Telephone and postal services have been restored, and electricity supplies returned to normal. Some shops are open for business.
According to rescue workers, a makeshift road linking Fuping with Yangxian County will be built within 10 days.
Fuping has a population of 35,000. In a bid to save every victim, the county government sent out nine relief groups to nine townships to assess the situation and carry out rescue work.
