A Red Cross inspection team left Beijing Friday for flood-hit Shaanxi to assess what the province needs in aid and relief.

The team, jointly formed by the China Red Cross Society, Red Cross of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and officials from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, will meet with flood victims.

Earlier, the China Red Cross Society and its Shaanxi branch sent 150 thousand yuan to the region for medicines and food, in addition to 50 tents for the evacuees.

The Chinese Red Cross also sent 100,000 yuan in aid to the southwest province of Sichuan.

Thirty million people from five provincial areas of China have been affected by heavy rains and severe floods since early June, and at least 205 people have died.

The five affected areas are Shaanxi Province in northwest China, Sichuan Province, Chongqing Municipality and Guizhou Province in the southwest, and Hubei Province in central China.

In Shaanxi, heavy rainfall from June 8 to 10 led to severe flooding, killing 152 people and affecting 5.1 million others. About 110,000 people in Shaanxi have been evacuated from their homes to safer areas.
