Eight people were killed in a huge bomb blast outside the US consulate in Karachi Friday, but no consulate staff were believed to be among the casualties, officials said.

"No one among the consulate officials or staffers has been killed or injured in the blast," said Home Secretary of Sindh Province, Mukhtar Sheikh.

"However, we are still assessing the identity of those killed. According to witnesses, among the dead is a private security guard posted outside the US consulate," he said.

A police source at the scene said that eight bodies had been found.

"Five bodies are intact and have been sent to hospital, and there are three more and the body parts are lying in different places," the source said.

The city's police chief Tariq Jamil said that it appears to be a suicide bomber, adding that one of the dead was a woman.

An unknown number of police officers on duty outside the building were also injured, he said.

"It was a car bomb but we don't know whether the vehicle was parked or whether it was moving. The blast was so powerful that the vehicle flew from one side of the road to the other side of the road," Jamil said.

A reporter said the bomb had destroyed part of the perimeter wall of the consulate, but the main gate was left intact.

The huge explosion left a deep crater on the road immediately next to the perimeter wall.

In May a car bomb attack outside the Sheraton hotel in Karachi killed 11 French nationals and three Pakistanis.

Pakistani police suspect the bombing was the work of the al-Qaeda terror network.
