Paraguay Advances with Three-Goal Second Half Thriller

Paraguay played an inspiring second half with one man down to beat Slovenia for a berth in the second round of the 2002 World Cup finals.

Paraguay played an inspiring second half with one man down to beat Slovenia for a berth in the second round of the 2002 World Cup finals.

The Paraguay team were reduced to 10 men after the 21st minute and was 0-1 behind as Milenko Acimovic opened the scoring for Slovenia at the 45th minute.

But the Paraguay team, inspired by veteran goalkeeper Jose LuisChilavert who made several brave saves, came back strongly in the second half.

Forward Nelson Cuevas, who came on as a substitute in the second half, levelled the scoring at the 65th minute. Another substitute forward Jorge Campos made it 2-1 for Paraguay at the 72nd minute.

The Slovenia team did have several chances in the second half, but their shots were denied twice by crossbar and Chilavert also blocked two.

At the 80th minute, Nastja Ceh of Slovenia was also shown the red card and only two minutes later, Nelson Cuevas sealed the 3-1 victory for Paraguay.

In another match played on Wednesday, Spain beat South Africa 3-2 to top the group.

Paraguay and South Africa are levelled on points and goal difference but Paraguay scored one more goal than South Africa andthat decided all.

Spain are now the only team which have won all three group matches. They will play in the round of 16 against Ireland. Paraguay will take on Group E winners Germany.
