Sweden Eliminates Argentina with 1-1 Draw
Sweden held to a 1-1 draw to eliminate the much fancied Argentina from the World Cup as they only garnered four points from three games, one point behind Sweden and England.
Sweden held to a 1-1 draw toeliminate the much fancied Argentina in a Group F match Wednesday in Miyagi.
In another Group F match played at Osaka, England played to a goalless draw and that was good enough to send them into the round of 16.
The Argentina were the better team throughout the game but it were Swedes that broke the deadlock first.
Anders Svensson volleyed a free-kick into the net at the 58th minute and then transferred to defence.
The Argentine team made all three substitutions in the second half but their effective build-up of offences often turned down bypoor finishing.
But the Argentine players never gave up and pushed desperately forward, trying to get an equalizer and even a winner. Their efforts finally paid off when they were awarded penalty kick at the 87th minute.
Swedish goalkeeper Magnus Hedman blocked Ariel Ortega's shot but second-half substitute Hernan Crespo slammed home the rebounder.
In the remaining minutes, the Argentina never had the chance toscore another goal against a determined and well-organised Swedishdefence.
